Amazonas Region: Bio-businesses as a Key Strategy for Sustainable Development
Nov 26, 2024
The Amazonas region, rich in biodiversity and culture, faces significant structural challenges, ranking 19th out of 25 in the 2023 Regional Competitiveness Index. Additionally, it has lost more than 116,000 hectares of forests between 2001 and 2022, highlighting the urgent need to promote sustainable strategies. In this context, bio-businesses, such as the value chains of goldenberry (aguaymanto), bamboo, native cacao, and dragon fruit (pitahaya), represent a unique opportunity to combat deforestation, conserve ecosystems, and foster inclusive economic development.
To maximize this potential, greater coordination among the government, businesses, local communities, and civil society is essential, along with the implementation of specific public policies to support the sector. This analysis explores how these initiatives can transform Amazonas' challenges into opportunities for a more balanced and sustainable future.
