How to apply

In Peru, deforestation is a serious problem caused mainly by agricultural expansion and soil degradation. To address this problem, this project aims to protect 500 hectares of forest on cocoa farms by implementing sustainable agroforestry practices. This project seeks to improve the quality and productivity of organic cocoa through technical assistance and the promotion of climate-smart agriculture.

The Central Cacao de Aroma de Tocache Cooperative (CECAT) is the main beneficiary of the project, as it seeks to consolidate its income and sustainable employment through organic certification and fair trade. This project aims to contribute to forest conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, while promoting inclusive practices in cocoa production in the Peruvian Amazon.

In addition, CECAT will provide a financial contribution from other projects to improve the business, commercial, social and production management of cocoa.

COOPERATIVA CENTRAL CACAO DE AROMA (CECAT)

CECAT is located in the province of Tocache, in the San Martin region, surrounded by lush vegetation and home to 399 cocoa producers, of which 27% are women and 73% are men.

Founded in 2014, the cooperative is made up of four producer organizations from Alto Huallaga that work together to implement sustainable agroforestry practices. Each farm of the partner producers has an average area of six hectares, three of which are dedicated to cocoa cultivation.

These partners are migrants who arrived in Tocache in the 1980s due to the coca leaf boom, but today they are seeking to strengthen their capacities to contribute to the production of 1,300 hectares of organic cocoa crops free of deforestation.

PROJECT PARTNERS

The implementing partner is Solidaridad, an organization dedicated to creating fair and sustainable value chains. As part of its "UK Climate Heroes" initiative funded by the UK government, Solidaridad also makes a financial contribution to this project.
