Diagnosis of women’s participation in sustainable business in Amazonia

Sep 1, 2023
The Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP) and the Business Alliance for the Amazon have conducted a study on the participation of women in sustainable businesses in the Peruvian Amazon, focusing on the regions of Huánuco, Madre de Dios, San Martín, and Ucayali. The report reveals that there are over one million micro and small enterprises (MSEs) led by women in Peru, generating approximately 4.8 million jobs and contributing 21% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened job loss, violence, and the burden of unpaid work for women, particularly for those who are heads of households.

Women's leadership in MSEs is crucial for sustainable development in Peru, as these businesses address unmet market needs and have the potential to improve the living conditions of many people. By integrating sustainability into their businesses, women make significant contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support national public policies that promote transformative and equitable initiatives.

To talk about sustainable business, we must talk about women.
