UCAYALI REGIONAL GOVERNMENT AND CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL SIGN AGREEMENT TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES

Sep 22, 2021
The Ucayali Regional Government (GOREU) and Conservation International Peru (CI Peru) signed a Framework Agreement for Interinstitutional Cooperation, committing to work together to facilitate the development of sustainable businesses contributing to national climate targets and Sustainable Development Goals. The main objective of the agreement is to contribute to the region's transition to an economy that promotes impact investments, especially in bio and eco-businesses, encourages the participation of women and indigenous peoples in these initiatives, and aligns public and private investment priorities.

The agreement has been signed within the framework of the Amazon Business Alliance an initiative promoted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and CI Peru to promote sustainable businesses in the Peruvian Amazon.

Francisco Torres Pezo, the regional governor of Ucayali, emphasized, “Ucayali has great potential to develop sustainable businesses. What we need is modernization, improved productivity, and added value to products, but in a sustainable way. With these types of partnerships, we can combine efforts for the benefit of the communities and populations in our region.”

In the same vein, Luis Espinel, Vice President for Peru at Conservation International, emphasized, “Conservation International is coming to the region to work alongside the Regional Government, businesses, indigenous peoples, and communities to create and consolidate initiatives that incorporate conservation and sustainability into their business models. Our goal is to contribute to the development of the region through the creation of alliances and the coordination of the public and private sectors.”

Jannet Benavides, from CI Peru and director of the Amazon Business Alliance, emphasized, “This has been an excellent opportunity to present the Business Alliance for the Amazon, promoted by USAID, to the team of the Regional Government of Ucayali. Now, the framework agreement will allow us to establish work plans and specific agreements to coordinate sustainable investments for the benefit of the local population and the region.”

The joint work foresees coordination and technical support to different instances of the GOREU, such as the Regional Environmental Authority and the management of Economic Development, Indigenous or Native Peoples, and Social Development, in order to strengthen capacities in environmental matters, sustainable management of natural resources, gender, and interculturality.
