San Martin Region: Biobusiness as a key strategy for sustainable development

Dec 2, 2024
San Martin, with its extraordinary biodiversity and advances in regulations and strategic planning, has established itself as an example in the promotion of sustainable bio-businesses. In this diagnosis, the San Martin region has prioritized key production chains such as pompona vanilla, cat's claw, sangre de grado and shiringa, which have enormous potential to boost the economy, create jobs and strengthen resilience in the face of climate change.

These bio-businesses not only generate economic benefits, but also ensure forest conservation, improve the livelihoods of local communities and contribute to low-emission rural development. Responsible management of productive landscapes makes it possible to use natural resources in a sustainable manner, while respecting the unique environmental and cultural setting of Sint Maarten.

These diagnoses provide an in-depth look at the opportunities and challenges of these production chains, highlighting their key role in building a region that promotes an ecosystem where bio-businesses can grow and be competitive.
