Among the sturdy cedar trunks, the Nuwa Forest has re-emerged under the protection of the indigenous women, known as nuwas in Awajún, of the native community of Shampuyacu. These women have revitalized a forest that had lost much of its cover due to deforestation, transforming it into a source of new opportunities to foster the local economy in a sustainable manner.

In collaboration with the Natural Products Laboratory of the Takiwasi Center, as a business partner, they developed strategic combinations of medicinal plants, giving rise to a sustainable business that revalues the Awajún culture, Nuwa Infusions.

The Nuwa Forest Association and Takiwasi Laboratories joined the Business Alliance for the Amazon to promote a business model that adds value to aromatic medicinal plants, favoring economic development and conservation of the community’s forests. This project included technical and administrative training that improved raw material production, ensured greater market access and guaranteed the sustainability of their chain.

In addition to improving the economic income and quality of life of the Indigenous women who make up the Bosque de la Nuwas association, the project focused on the recovery and appreciation of ancestral knowledge related to medicinal plants, as well as providing technical assistance to increase production. This ensures the sustainability of the value chain while promoting the responsible use of the Amazon’s natural resources.
