Provincial Municipality of Oxapampa and Conservation International Sign Agreement for the Environmental, Social, and Economic Development of the Province

Nov 29, 2024

Oxapampa, November 2024. The Provincial Municipality of Oxapampa and Conservation International Peru have signed an agreement aimed at consolidating efforts in the conservation of natural resources, the creation of sustainable public policies, and the promotion of responsible investments that benefit local communities and nature.

The agreement establishes a framework of cooperation to design and implement strategies that mitigate the effects of climate change and strengthen the management of natural resources in the province. It will focus on developing technical capacities and fostering alliances between local authorities, the community, and the private sector.

“This is the first time we have signed an agreement with Conservation International. This international cooperation framework agreement aims to work hand in hand and in coordination to pursue objectives that favor the sustainable development of the province of Oxapampa, by developing activities and projects that contribute to the sustainable management of resources and environmental services.”

Mercedes Salinas

Manager of Economic Development of the Municipality

One of the ongoing activities is the proposal for Procompite 2025. For this reason, training sessions are already being conducted to ensure that the technical team is well-prepared and to guarantee the success of Procompite.

The specific objectives include promoting sustainable low-carbon investments, fostering environmentally friendly businesses, and designing projects that integrate biodiversity as the foundation of local development. Likewise, the active participation of local and Indigenous communities will be encouraged to ensure an inclusive and intercultural approach.

Luis Espinel, Vice President of Conservation International, highlighted:

"Through the Amazon Business Alliance, we seek to promote sustainable businesses that protect the Amazon and help mitigate climate change. However, to achieve this, we need more allies. This agreement between the Provincial Municipality of Oxapampa and Conservation International strengthens our commitment to working together to scale these efforts, protect nature, and develop strategies with a lasting impact for present and future generations."

This strategic alliance marks a milestone for both the province of Oxapampa and Conservation International Peru by consolidating their commitment to conserving natural heritage, ensuring community well-being, and advancing sustainable development as a model for other regions and provinces in the country.

This agreement is part of the Amazon Business Alliance, a platform led by USAID, the Government of Canada, and Conservation International, which promotes sustainable businesses that have a positive impact on the Amazon.
