How to apply

The project aims to conserve 15,000 hectares of primary forest in the villages of Manití and Santa Cecilia, in the province of Maynas, in the Loreto region of Peru and to boost local economies to improve the quality of life of families in the communities.

To achieve this, a biodiversity-based bio-business incubator will be implemented in the communities adjacent to the forest, through the identification and management of funding sources and the promotion of community entrepreneurship. The project also seeks to strengthen capacities and transfer tools to communities to empower them and promote mitigation and adaptation actions related to climate change.

In addition, the project promotes the implementation of public-private climate management and sustainability policies to boost local economies based on the conservation and sustainable use of the forest.

Communities of Santa Cecilia and Manití

In the communities of Santa Cecilia and Manití, 59% of its farmers are migrants who came to the area for an palm oil project that was never implemented. In addition to the lack of access to education, the communities lack potable water and sewage connected to a public network, and only one of the communities has electricity between seven and nine o'clock at night. Agriculture, small animal husbandry, fishing, charcoal production, and forestry are the main sources of livelihood.

However, there are opportunities that can change this reality, with potential sustainable businesses for the communities, such as fish farming, cassava production and poultry raising, as well as other activities that promote forest conservation and improve the quality of life of their families.
