The new office in Pucallpa is the third office of Conservation International in Peru, joining the offices in Lima and Rioja (in the San Martin region). In this way, the organization settles in Ucayali to continue a joint, articulated and long-term work in favor of the sustainability of the Amazon, together with strategic partners such as regional governments, communities and indigenous organizations, local NGOs and the private sector.
Conservation International is an international non-profit organization that has been promoting the responsible and sustainable care of nature in Peru for 34 years. The opening of this new office seeks to consolidate the work that has been developed in the regions of Ucayali, Huánuco, Pasco and Junín. In these regions, one of its main work focuses on establishing and strengthening the management of protected natural areas, contributing to the Purús and El Sira communal reserves, the Alto Purús National Park, the Sierra del Divisor National Park, and the Alto Tamaya Abujao and Imiría regional conservation areas. It is in this same line of work that the organization has contributed to the recent creation of the Regional Conservation System of Ucayali.
In relation to the strengthening of indigenous peoples and local communities, we have begun to promote conservation agreements with emblematic villages such as Hatun Rumi and Shipibo indigenous women’s associations such as Wexa Beka and Reshin Rate of the Atahualpa de Tabacoa and Flor de Ucayali Native Communities, respectively. This is complemented by the Amazon Indigenous Women’s Program, with which we are supporting initiatives of Ucayali indigenous women leaders such as Cecilia Brito (Santa Lucia N.C.), Imelina Benavides (Koshireni N.C.), Marisela Vargas (Sepahua N.C.).
Conservation International also seeks to promote and facilitate the development of sustainable businesses through the Amazon Business Alliance, a platform promoted in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of Canada.
